About this story

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel by the American writer L. Frank Baum, published in 1900 with pictures by W. W. Denslow. A cyclone carries Dorothy and her dog Toto from Kansas to the Land of Oz, where she follows the yellow brick road with the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion. The book has 24 chapters, so this version keeps the core arc, from the cyclone to the silver shoes carrying her home, and skips side adventures such as the Kalidahs, the deadly poppy field and the China Country.

What it teaches

Dorothy's friends go looking for brains, a heart and courage, yet they show those qualities all along the road; the Wizard's gifts only help them believe it. And however wonderful Oz is, Dorothy still wants to go home to the people who love her.

Tips for telling it

  • Give each friend a body to match: a floppy Scarecrow, a creaky Tin Woodman, a Lion who roars and then sniffles.
  • Ask your child where each friend showed brains, heart or courage before the Wizard's gifts.
  • Clap three times with Dorothy when she knocks her silver heels together.

Questions people ask

Were Dorothy's shoes silver in the book?
Yes. In Baum's 1900 book they are silver shoes, which belonged to the Wicked Witch of the East. The ruby slippers were invented for the 1939 MGM film to show off its Technicolor.
Was Oz just a dream in the book?
No. In the book Oz is a real place: Dorothy really travels there, the silver shoes fall off over the desert on her way home, and Baum went on to write thirteen more Oz books. The it-was-all-a-dream ending comes from the 1939 film.
Who is the good witch in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz?
There are two. The Good Witch of the North, who has no name in the book, welcomes Dorothy and kisses her forehead. Glinda is the Good Witch of the South, who tells her how to use the silver shoes. The 1939 film merged them into one character.
