Phone Voice Effect - Make Text Sound Like a Phone Call
Phone voice effect online: type a line and get a voice that sounds like it comes through a phone, clean or with a bad connection. No EQ in Premiere or CapCut. Try it free.

A phone voice effect makes a voiceover sound like it is coming through a phone: a narrow band, the lows and highs cut away, a slightly electronic edge. Instead of fixing it later with an EQ in Premiere or CapCut, pick a voice, add the phone effect and type the line; it comes out already sounding like a call. Try it below, free and without signing up.
Try it free: type a line, hear it on the phone

Hear it
A regular phone call, in English:
The same effect in Mandarin:
Bad phone line: narrower and muffled, like a poor connection.
Phone voice effect: fix it in post or generate it
| EQ in Premiere, CapCut or Audacity | Generate it | |
|---|---|---|
| Start from | A recording or a normal voiceover | A line of text |
| Phone sound | Cut lows and highs with an EQ, keep the middle band, add a touch of distortion, listen, adjust | The phone effect applied while generating |
| Bad connection | Narrow the band further and add noise | Switch to "bad phone line" |
| Change a line | Re-record and re-process | Edit the text and generate again |
VoiceSmiths uses the audio effects ElevenLabs launched on October 12, 2026. ElevenLabs describes its phone filter as a standard phone band with presence peaks for intelligibility. The effect is applied as the speech is generated and costs nothing extra.
Where a phone voice works
- Audio dramas and podcasts: the voice on the other end of the line instantly reads as a call.
- Thrillers and horror: a late-night call on a bad line.
- Ads and short videos: a customer-service call, a delivery driver, a family video call.
- Games and animation: radios, comms, mission briefings.
One person in the room, one on the phone
Effects apply to the whole clip, so split the scene:
- Generate the person in the room normally.
- Generate the caller's lines on their own with "phone" or "bad phone line".
- Cut them together in your editor and add subtitles.
Want room tone too? The workbench has café and city-street background sound, good for "I'm at the café, come find me":
More effects (robot, old radio, hall, tunnel, forest) are on the robot voice generator page and in the voice workbench.
Pricing
- On this page: free, no sign-up, two tries a day, up to 200 characters each.
- In the workbench: 7 credits per 100 characters; effects add nothing. The $3.90 trial pack has 150 credits (one-time, no subscription, credits never expire). See pricing.
FAQ
How do you make a phone voice effect? Two ways. In post: record or generate a normal voice, then in Premiere Pro, CapCut, DaVinci Resolve or Audacity cut the lows and highs with an EQ so only the middle band is left, and add a little distortion. Or generate it directly: pick a voice, add the phone effect, type the line, and the speech comes out already sounding like a call.
Is the phone voice effect free? You can try it free on this page: no sign-up, two tries a day, up to 200 characters each. Longer scripts in the VoiceSmiths workbench cost 7 credits per 100 characters; the effect adds nothing.
Is there a bad-connection version? Yes. Besides the regular phone effect there is "bad phone line": narrower and more muffled, like a poor connection. It is the one thrillers and horror scenes usually want.
How do I put only the caller on the phone in a dialogue? Effects apply to the whole generated clip. Generate the caller's lines on their own with the phone effect, generate the person in the room normally, and cut them together in your editor.
Can I add background sound like a café or a street? Yes. The workbench effects include café and city-street background sound laid under the voice, plus room echoes (hall, tunnel, forest). Each generation takes one effect.
