Prompt to voice turns a sentence into a brand-new voice: describe the age, gender, timbre, pace and character you want, and AI designs a voice that never existed before. Try it below without signing up: write a description, and Gemini 3.8 designs the voice and improvises a few lines in character. Hear a voice made from one sentence

The prompt: "The classic Hollywood 'In a world…' trailer voice: ultra-deep, gravelly, epic." Gemini answered with an epic opening about the history of mankind:

Voice: Gemini designed voice · Trailer VoiceEnglishModel: gemini-3.8-flash-tts32 s
Transcript:In the vast tapestry of time, where echoes of ancient whispers persist among the sands, one thing remains clear: this is the course of human history. The world we built, the boundaries we pushed, and now we stand at a crossroads.

How to write a voice prompt

Formula: age + gender + timbre + pace + manner or role. The more specific the description, the steadier the voice.

Voice you wantPrompt you can copy
Late-night radio hostA man in his thirties, low and gentle, unhurried, like a late-night radio host telling a story
Bright young narratorA woman in her early twenties, clear and bright, quick and playful, with a smile in her voice
Documentary narratorA man in his forties, deep and steady, precise diction, measured pace, made for nature documentaries
Calm British butlerA refined British butler in crisp RP: calm, dry, impeccably courteous
Warm storytellerA woman in her sixties with a warm, slightly husky voice, slow and cosy, like reading a bedtime story

Four rules that save retries:

  • Describe fixed traits, not a passing mood. Leave "whispering" or "furious" for audio tags when you voice a script.
  • Write in the language you want to hear. Gemini's preview follows the language of the description.
  • Describe the sound, not the threat. "Low, slow, cold, crisp diction" passes; "menacing, every word a blade" was blocked by Gemini's safety policy in our test.
  • Name no one. Leave out celebrities, streamers and characters; describe the voice itself.

To hear what a sentence can become, the free demo above is enough. To use the voice in a video, a podcast or an audiobook, design it in the VoiceSmiths workbench: the voice appears in your library, no code needed.

More tests and the API walkthrough are on Gemini voice design.

After you design a voice

  1. Open the voice workbench → Voices, name the voice and write the description (at least 20 characters), then click generate.
  2. The voice appears in your voice list; only you can see and use it.
  3. Pick it in text to speech to read any script, or cast it in the audio drama studio: every character's voice menu has a "My voices" group.

Want a real person's voice, such as your own? That is voice cloning, which starts from a recording.

FAQ

What is prompt to voice? Prompt to voice (also called voice design) creates a brand-new synthetic voice from a text description, such as "a calm woman in her forties with a warm, low voice and a slight British accent". No recording is needed. OpenAI, Google Gemini and ElevenLabs all offer it.

Is there a free prompt-to-voice tool? Yes. This page lets you design two voices a day for free, no sign-up, using Google Gemini 3.8 voice design (a site-wide free allowance; if it runs out, come back tomorrow). To keep a voice and use it for voiceovers, design it in the VoiceSmiths workbench for 20 credits per voice.

When did OpenAI release prompt-to-voice? On October 16, 2026, for all API customers. You create the voice through the API or the voice Playground at no charge, but according to OpenAI's documentation the voice only works in GPT-Live sessions; the Text to Speech, Realtime and Chat Completions APIs do not support it.

Can I make a voice that sounds like a celebrity or a cartoon character? No. OpenAI does not allow imitating a named person, public figure or fictional character, and Gemini blocks some descriptions. Describe the voice itself (age, timbre, pace, manner) instead of naming anyone.

Which languages work? Gemini voice design follows the language of your description: write it in Mandarin and the preview is in Mandarin. ElevenLabs voice design, which the VoiceSmiths workbench uses, handles English, Chinese and many other languages. OpenAI has not listed the languages prompt-to-voice supports.
