A robot voice generator turns text straight into a metallic, sci-fi robot voice. No recording and no effect chain in an audio editor: pick a voice, add the robot effect, and the speech comes out sounding like a machine. Try it below, free and without signing up.

Hear it: the robot voice in English
The same idea in Mandarin. First the plain voice, then the same line with the robot effect:
How a robot voice is made
| The old way | A robot voice generator | |
|---|---|---|
| Start from | A recording, or a normal voiceover | Text |
| Robot sound | Stack a vocoder, flanger and bit crusher in an editor and tweak | A robot filter applied while generating |
| Change a line | Re-record and re-process | Edit the text and generate again |
| You need | A microphone, an editor, some mixing skill | A browser |
VoiceSmiths uses the audio effects ElevenLabs launched on October 12, 2026. Its robot filter is described as "metallic, modulated, slightly broken, a classic sci-fi voice". The effect is applied as the speech is generated and costs nothing extra.
What people use robot voices for
- Sci-fi shorts and trailers: an AI waking up, a starship computer, an end-of-the-world system alert.
- Games and animation: robot NPCs, system announcements, mech pilots.
- Audio dramas with a robot character: generate the robot's lines on their own, then mix them with the rest of the cast.
- AI assistant characters on YouTube Shorts and TikTok: "Hello, human" is a good hook.
More effects in the same family
The robot sits with the other filters: phone call, bad phone line and old radio. The old radio suits period dramas and newsreel narration:
For a voice on a phone call, see the phone voice effect. The voice workbench also has room echoes (hall, tunnel, forest) and background sound (café, city street).
Longer robot voiceovers in the workbench
- Open the voice workbench; the robot effect is already selected.
- Pick a voice and paste your script, up to 5,000 characters at a time.
- Generate and download the MP3. You can also design your own voice first with prompt to voice and then put the robot effect on it.
Pricing
- On this page: free, no sign-up, two tries a day, up to 200 characters each.
- In the workbench: 7 credits per 100 characters; effects add nothing. The $3.90 trial pack has 150 credits (one-time, no subscription, credits never expire), about 2,000 characters of robot voice. See pricing.
FAQ
Is this robot voice generator free? You can try it free on this page: no sign-up, two tries a day, up to 200 characters each, and the result already has the robot effect. Longer scripts in the VoiceSmiths workbench cost 7 credits per 100 characters; the robot effect adds nothing.
How is a robot voice made? The old way is to record (or generate) a normal voice and then stack effects such as a vocoder, flanger or bit crusher in an audio editor. Here the robot filter from ElevenLabs is applied while the speech is generated (ElevenLabs describes it as metallic, modulated and slightly broken, a classic sci-fi voice), so text goes in and a robot voice comes out.
Is this text to speech or a voice changer? Text to speech. A voice changer transforms a recording you already made; this generator starts from text, so you need no microphone and a new line is just new text. To change a recording, use the voice changer in the audio toolbox.
Can I make only one character in a dialogue sound like a robot? Effects apply to the whole generated clip, so generate the robot's lines on their own with the robot effect, generate the other characters normally, and put them together in your editor. For a dialogue where everyone is a robot, generate it in one go in the multi-speaker dialogue tool.
Which languages work? Any language the voice speaks. Pick a Mandarin voice and you get a Mandarin robot; English, Japanese and others work the same way. The samples on this page are English and Mandarin.
Start with one line
Type the line you want a robot to say in the box above and hear it free. When it sounds right, make the full voiceover in the workbench.
