The hard part isn't reading it — it's reading all of it

Anyone can produce a good-sounding sample chapter. What actually stalls audiobook studios is different: how to schedule a million words, whether the male-lead and female-lead lines need different narrators, and whether the voice recorded in March still matches the one recorded in June.

Human recording fails hardest on that third one. The narrator changes, the room changes, the mic changes — and listeners hear it in the first sentence.

That is precisely where synthesis wins: a voice is a fixed ID. It sounds identical today and three months from now.

Three production lines, three voices

The genre fiction market really splits into two main lines plus the antagonist parts. Here is a real opening from each:

Male-lead — fantasy / wuxia

Voice: GeorgeEnglish13 s
Transcript:The moment the blade came down, the entire mountain sect went silent. Someone recognised that sword — the first cursed weapon, sealed in the blade tomb three hundred years ago. Tonight, it had walked out on its own.

Female-lead — contemporary romance

Voice: JessicaEnglish7 s
Transcript:She only found out much later that he had taken the long way round that day, just so he could happen to run into her outside the convenience store.

Antagonist — opposing scene

Voice: AliceEnglish9 s
Transcript:You have knelt for three hundred years. What did it get you? Let me say this plainly — it is time someone else held up this sky.

Three clips, three separate voices. A confrontation scene inside one book does not need one narrator straining to play both parts — split the script by speaker and hand it to multi-speaker dialogue.

The same engine also narrates Mandarin natively — here is a traditional Chinese storyteller opening, useful if you license web novels out of the Chinese market:

Voice: 老者说书人Chinese17 s
Transcript:上回书说到,那少年提剑立于城门之下,身后是三千追兵,身前是万丈深渊。他回头笑了一声——诸位,且听下回分解。

Submit the chapter, not the fragments

Cutting a 10,000-word chapter into twenty pieces, generating twenty times, then stitching them in an editor — that is how most tools actually work, and the seams are exactly where it falls apart.

Long-form mode accepts 50,000 characters in one submission. It chunks on blank lines internally, and each chunk carries its neighbours as context, so intonation does not reset at the seams. You get one MP3 plus a caption track that runs the length of the chapter.

A 10,000-word chapter finishes in one to two minutes.

A production plan for a full-length novel

StepWhat to doWhy it matters
1. Lock the voiceTest 3–5 voices on chapter one, then write the winner into the production sheetSwitch voices later and every finished chapter has to be redone
2. Build a pronunciation tableAdd character names, place names and invented terms to the pronunciation dictionaryAn invented name may appear hundreds of times; one wrong reading means redoing the book
3. Split by speakerSingle voice + long-form for narration; multi-speaker for dialogue-heavy chaptersPure-dialogue chapters sound flat in a single voice
4. Batch by volumeSubmit a volume at a time, spot-check the first and last passage of eachSpot-checking is 20× faster and the problems cluster at the seams
5. Export captionsPull the SRT alongside every chapterPlatform uploads, proofreading and clip repurposing all need it

Step 2 is the one people skip, and it has the highest rework rate.

FAQ

Will platforms flag an AI-narrated novel? They penalise flat delivery, not synthesis. Character voices with real range, one voice per speaker, emotion tags on dialogue. Test a chapter first.

What does a 300,000-word novel cost? Per character — roughly 1.7M characters, about 119,000 credits. About $840 on the Pro yearly plan, which covers it. Failed chunks are refunded.

Different voices for hero, heroine and narrator? Yes — multi-speaker dialogue, one voice bound per character.

Who owns the audio? You do. Clear the rights to any third-party novel yourself — that is separate from the tool.
