What most EPUB to audiobook converters do differently

Many EPUB to audiobook tools read the whole book in one voice, which suits narration-heavy books. Dialogue-heavy fiction is where a single voice falls flat, and it is what this studio is built for. A few other tools also assign voices to characters, so compare samples before you buy.

For a book carried by one narrator, the long-form mode takes up to 50,000 characters a job, but EPUB import lives only in the studio, so there you paste each chapter's text.

How to convert an EPUB to an audiobook

  1. Import the file. In the audio drama studio, choose Import a whole novel and pick your EPUB. It is split at its chapter headings, and each chapter shows its length and estimated credits. A long chapter becomes several parts.
  2. Cast the first chapter. Load it and click Find the characters. Listen to each voice and swap any that don't fit. This uses no credits, but your account needs some.
  3. Start a series. Add the first chapter to a series, so returning characters keep their voices in every later chapter.
  4. Render the rest. Do chapters one at a time, or queue up to 50 at once. The queue keeps going after you close the page and emails you when it finishes or if your credits run out.
  5. Check and fix. Listen for names and invented words. In a full-cast chapter you can redo a single line and pay for that line only.

Queued chapters are cast by the AI with no chance to edit the cast first, so check your first chapter in the studio before you queue the rest.

Which EPUB files work

  • Works: DRM-free EPUB and TXT, up to 30 MB.
  • Doesn't work: DRM-protected EPUBs (the studio tells you and stops), PDF and Kindle files.
  • Languages: the studio casts English, Chinese and Japanese books, with native voices in each.

The text then goes through a content check before anything is generated, and sexual content is refused.

Before you publish

  • Rights. Your own book or a public-domain title is fine. Audio rights to anything else usually sit with the publisher or author.
  • Stores. Audible's standard ACX channel requires human narration. At the time of writing, Spotify (through Findaway Voices), Google Play Books and Kobo accept AI-narrated audiobooks with disclosure. Check each store's current rules.
  • Files. Renders are 192 kbps constant-bitrate MP3. Stores also set loudness targets, so master each chapter first. See AI audiobook publishing.

FAQ

How do I convert an EPUB to an audiobook? In the audio drama studio, choose Import a whole novel and pick the EPUB. It is split into chapters with each one's length and cost. Load a chapter, click Find the characters, preview it, then render it to MP3 and SRT. To do many chapters, add up to 50 at a time to the queue.

Is there a free EPUB to audiobook converter? VoiceSmiths is not free to generate on: rendering is charged by length, and finding the cast needs credits in your account (it uses none). Free open-source tools such as epub2audio run on your own computer if you are comfortable with the command line. Most read the book in one voice rather than casting your characters.

Does it work with Kindle books or PDFs? No. It reads DRM-free EPUB and TXT files up to 30 MB. A DRM-protected EPUB is refused, and PDF and Kindle files are not supported.

Is my book uploaded? The file is read in your browser and kept there, so the whole book is not uploaded. Only the chapters you load or queue are sent, because the AI has to read their text to cast and voice them.

Do I get one audiobook file or one per chapter? One MP3 and one SRT subtitle file per chapter or part, ready to order in your publishing tool. There is no M4B export.

Start with one chapter

Before you convert a whole EPUB to an audiobook, pick your most typical chapter and render only that. If the voices fit the characters, start a series and queue the rest.
