An old man voice generator reads your text in an elderly voice: a warm grandpa telling a story, a wise mentor with a warning, or a gravelly village storyteller. On VoiceSmiths you type the line, pick an elderly voice and download an MP3 with timed subtitles; no recording, no voice changer. Hear the finished voices first.
A grandpa remembering the old days, British Butler with a [chuckles] tag:
[warmly] Sit down, lad. When I was your age, the river froze so hard we walked to school across it. [chuckles] Uphill both ways, naturally. The old mentor at the start of a quest, slower, with a [sighs]:
[slowly] You seek the old road. Many have. [sighs] Few came back the same. Take the lantern, and whatever you hear, do not look behind you.Old Storyteller, a Mandarin elder in the style of a pingshu teller, opening a folk tale:
[slowly] 话说那年冬天,村口来了个卖伞的老头。天上一滴雨都没有,他却说:今晚,你们都会来找我。Hear each elderly voice's own preview
Tap a voice to hear it. To voice your own text, paste it into the workbench: 7 credits per 100 characters, starting with the $3.90 trial pack.
Old man voices to choose from
| Voice | How he sounds | Designed in | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Butler | Elderly, measured, dry, impeccably polite | English (RP) | Grandpas, mentors, wizards, audiobook elders |
| Old Storyteller | Old, gravelly, rich rise and fall | Mandarin | Folk tales, legends, history, campfire stories |
| Wandering Swordsman | Weathered, deep, steady (late middle age) | Mandarin | Old masters, retired heroes, game narrators |
None of these is your character? Describe him in a sentence with prompt to voice, or search the community voices in the workbench with the age filter set to old.
What people use an old man voice for
- Fantasy and games: the wizard who hands over the map, the hermit at the crossroads, the last king.
- Family and kids' stories: a grandfather reading a bedtime tale; see picture book voiceover.
- Audiobooks and audio dramas: the elder in a full cast; the audio drama studio casts every character from your story.
- YouTube history and folklore channels: an old storyteller's voice carries legends better than a bright one.
- Ads with a story: "My grandfather opened this shop in 1952…"
How to make an elderly voice sound more convincing
- Start from an old voice. Age lives in the voice itself; text cannot make a young voice old.
- Write the way old men talk: shorter sentences, a pause before the point, a joke at their own expense.
- Use tags sparingly:
[sighs],[chuckles]or[slowly]at the turn of a line; Eleven v4 acts them instead of reading them aloud, as in the samples above. - Slow the scene, not every word. Let the last line of a story land with an ellipsis: "And he never came back... until that night."
Make an old man voiceover in the workbench
- Open the voice workbench; British Butler and Eleven v4 are already selected. For the Mandarin storyteller, open it with Old Storyteller.
- Paste your lines, up to 5,000 characters at a time.
- Generate, then download the MP3 and the SRT subtitles. For a scene with the old man and other characters, use multi-speaker dialogue.

FAQ
Is this old man voice generator free? Listening is free: every sample on this page plays for anyone, no account needed. Generating your own lines happens in the VoiceSmiths workbench at 7 credits per 100 characters. A first order can be the taster pack ($1.99, 100 credits, about 1,400 characters, once per account); the trial pack is $3.90 for new users in the first hour after sign-up (list $9.90) with 500 credits, about 7,100 characters, one-time and never expiring.
Is there an American old man voice? Our designed elderly voices are British Butler (English, received pronunciation) and Old Storyteller (Mandarin). For an American grandpa, search the 5,000+ community voices in the workbench with the age filter set to old, or describe the voice you want ("a raspy 80-year-old fisherman from Maine") with prompt to voice and design it in a minute.
Can it sound like a famous old actor or a character from a film? No. Our voices were designed from text descriptions, not cloned from a performer, and our terms forbid imitating a real person. You can design an original elderly voice of the same type, a kindly grandfather or a stern old general, with prompt to voice.
Can I make my own recording sound older? This page is text to speech. To turn a recording of yourself into an elderly voice, use the voice changer in Audio Tools with an old target voice such as British Butler: your timing and emotion stay, only the voice changes.
Which languages can the old man voices speak? British Butler was designed in English and Old Storyteller in Mandarin. On Eleven v4 either can read 80+ languages, keeping the accent it was designed with.
Can I use an old man voice in a video, game or audiobook I sell? Yes. Audio you generate can be used commercially under our terms of service. What you may not do is pass it off as a real person or use it to impersonate one.
Start with one line
Hear the elderly voices above. When one fits, paste his lines into the workbench and make the full voiceover. More low, resonant voices are on the deep voice generator page.
