Disclosure: written by the VoiceSmiths team, and VoiceSmiths is one of the tools compared. We are not neutral, but every claim about another product comes from that product's own pages, checked on 4 October 2026, and we say plainly where others are the better pick. Where something could not be verified (pricing behind a login, for example), the table says so. Check vendor sites before buying.
Short answer: pick by the job, not the brand
- A chapter or script you already have, possibly in several languages: VoiceSmiths. Paste text, characters are found and cast, and the same cast can perform it in nine languages.
- A whole book from an EPUB or PDF, headed for audiobook stores: ElevenLabs Audiobooks, or Narratemi if you prefer pay-as-you-go.
- A drama with music and sound effects baked in: drama.so, AudioProducer.ai or Fabula.fm. All three do sound design; VoiceSmiths does not.
- Only a one-line idea: Fabula.fm writes and casts the drama from a premise.
- A short script where you pick every voice yourself: Musely's Audio Drama Generator.
What "audio drama generator" should mean
A text-to-speech tool reads text in a voice. An audio drama generator has to do three more things: work out who says each line, give each character a distinct and consistent voice, and direct the delivery. Some tools add a fourth, sound design. We compared on those, plus the things that decide whether you can actually ship the result: what you can feed in, what you get out, other languages, and what it costs to get a first finished file.
The comparison

Not in the table: Sherpa by Pocket FM ranks for "AI audio drama generator" but is single-narrator (you choose one narrator), so it is an audiobook tool rather than a full-cast one.
Notes on each
VoiceSmiths (ours). Built for the chapter-at-a-time job: paste, check the cast, preview, render, with an SRT for video editors. Its distinctive piece is the language step: a Chinese script can be adapted into English, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, French or German with each character keeping their voice. VoiceSmiths renders on ElevenLabs' Eleven v4 model, so the voice quality is the same lineage; the difference is the workflow around it. No music or sound effects, and no whole-book import. Walkthroughs: web novel chapter to audio drama and Chinese short drama into English.
ElevenLabs. The most complete platform. Since July 2026 its Audiobooks product detects characters in a manuscript and proposes a voice for each; ElevenLabs itself calls the detection a starting point that may miss characters. In Studio, voices are assigned by selecting text. The pick if the end product is a whole book published to stores. Free credits are for personal use only.
drama.so. A vertical short-drama video studio with an audio path: dialogue, effects and music in one pass, and the same cast carries into video. Its own FAQ says audio-only means exporting the episode and extracting the audio. The free tier is non-commercial; commercial use starts at Pro.
Narratemi. Whole-book, pay-as-you-go, with chapter markers and a sound soundboard. Credits do not expire. Selling the output requires owning the rights to the text, which is true of every tool here.
AudioProducer.ai. Whole books with sound design: its markup step tags characters, emotions and effects, which you can edit. Paid prices were not visible without signing in.
Fabula.fm. Starts from an idea rather than your text: give it a premise and it writes, casts and scores a short drama, and can continue it with the same cast. Its terms make no representation about the copyright status of the output.
Musely. A script tool with manual casting: you fill character slots and choose voices, with per-line emotions and voice effects. Good for short scenes you are writing from scratch.
CastTale. Promising whole-book audio drama with mixed sound and a read-along player, but pre-launch at the time of writing.
Where we would send you elsewhere
- You want music and sound design in the file: drama.so, AudioProducer.ai or Fabula.fm.
- You are producing an entire book for Audible-style distribution: ElevenLabs Audiobooks or Narratemi.
- You need video, not audio: drama.so.
FAQ
What is the best AI audio drama generator for Chinese web novels?
We are biased, but VoiceSmiths was built around Chinese text: its casting reads Chinese speech verbs and forms of address, it has 15 Chinese character voices, and it can take the result into eight other languages. Run a chapter through the free casting step before deciding.
Is there a free AI audio drama generator?
Every tool above has some free use. VoiceSmiths lets anyone find the characters and see the voice proposed for each without an account; previews and renders use credits. ElevenLabs' free credits are personal use only; drama.so's free tier is watermarked and non-commercial.
Can I sell what these tools produce?
It depends on the plan, and on owning the rights to the text. VoiceSmiths audio is yours to use commercially under its terms. ElevenLabs requires a paid plan for commercial use; drama.so requires Pro.
Which tools add music and sound effects?
drama.so, AudioProducer.ai, Fabula.fm and Narratemi do; VoiceSmiths and Musely leave sound design to your editor.
Where can I hear examples?
The VoiceSmiths theater has 76 finished episodes in seven languages, each with its script.
