关于这个故事

Orpheus and Eurydice is one of the great love stories of Greek myth. Its best-known tellings are Latin: Virgil's Georgics, Book 4 (29 BC), and Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book 10 (AD 8), which call the rulers of the dead Dis and Proserpina; this version uses their Greek names, Hades and Persephone. It follows Ovid: the snakebite in the meadow, the song that makes the Furies weep, the rule not to look back and Eurydice's last farewell, with Charon's refusal the second time. It ends with Ovid's gentle reunion of the pair in the Underworld from Book 11, and leaves out the violent death of Orpheus that comes just before it.

故事告诉我们

Love can be brave enough to walk into the dark, but it also needs trust and patience. Orpheus kept his promise almost all the way and broke it at the last moment, which is why the story still makes people think about doubt, grief and letting go.

讲给孩子听的小贴士

  • Play soft music under the Underworld scenes and stop it the moment Orpheus turns round.
  • Pause before the climb and ask: could you walk all that way without looking back?
  • It's a sad story, so end on the reunion and talk about how we keep loved ones close in memory.

常见问题

Why did Orpheus look back?
Ovid says he was afraid Eurydice was falling behind and longed to see her. Virgil calls it a sudden madness that seized him just as they reached the light, a mistake that could be forgiven, he says, if the dead knew how to forgive.
Did Orpheus ever get Eurydice back?
Not in life: he lost her a second time when he looked back, and Charon would not ferry him across again. But Ovid says that after Orpheus died, his spirit found her in the Underworld, and there they walk together forever.
What is the moral of Orpheus and Eurydice?
That love is powerful, even able to move the rulers of the dead, but it needs trust: doubting for a single moment undid everything. Many people also read it as a story about grief and accepting a loss.
